BRYOLOGICAL STUDIES IN THE WESTERN CARPATHIANS

Edited by Adam Stebel & Ryszard Ochyra

The book comprises of 15 articles which may be divided into three groups, the first of which consists of a single paper.

Although a catalogue of the mosses of the Polish Carpathians is still under preparation, the present state of knowledge of the regional moss flora is such that time is now ripe for the presentation of the first Red-list of threatened moss species in this region. This local list is compared with a newly revised national (for Poland)  Red-list of mosses.

The next seven articles deal with individual moss species and genera which are rare or otherwise phytogeographically interesting in the Western Carpathians. Two of them consider the distribution of the rare and protected moss Buxbaumia viridis in the Slezské Beskydy and Polish Tatras. Two others are devoted to the rare coprophilous species Splachnum sphaericum and Tetraplodon angustatus and a separate paper deals with the rare and now heavily declining oceanic species Hookeria lucens. This group of papers is supplemented by an article describing the distributions of three species of the genus Codriophorus and another presenting the highest localities of Rhodobryum roseum in the Polish Carpathians.

Finally, the third group consists of seven bryofloristic contributions dealing with mostly undercollected areas in the Polish Western Carpathians which yield many new floristic records for particular areas, including the Carpathian Foothills and the whole of the Western Beskidy. Two papers deal with the moss flora of nature reserves in the Beskid Śląski and Beskid Mały, one with the Babia Góra National Park and one is a preliminary account of the epiphytic bryophyte flora of Bielsko-Biała, one of the largest industrial towns in the Western Beskidy.

MOSSES OF THE POLICA RANGE
(POLISH WESTERN CARPATHIANS)

by A. Stebel, R. Ochyra, L. Stuchlik & J.B. Parusel

As a result of many years’ bryological investigations in the Polica Range in the Beskidy Zachodnie (Polish Western Carpathians), 264 species and five varieties of moss have been discovered. This number of taxa makes the moss flora of the Polica much richer than that of some other parts of the Beskidy Zachodnie. Two species, Niphotrichum ericoides (Brid.) Bednarek-Ochyra & Ochyra and Splachnum ampullaceum Hedw., have in this range the only localities in the whole of the Beskidy Zachodnie. Over half of the total number of species (57.2%) constitute very rare and rare species which are recorded at 1–3 and 4–8 stations, respectively, whereas common species which are noted at at least 26 sites contribute 11.2% of the total flora. The main ecological groups of mosses are characterized in detail and distribution of taxa is mapped. The largest ecological groups comprise epigean (122), epilithic (120), paludiculous (54), epiphytic (52), epixylic (38), and aquatic (15) species. An annotated list of taxa including listing all collecting sites is presented. Endangered and protected species of the study area are briefly discussed and presented in the Table.

IDENTIFICATION KEYS TO THE LIVERWORTS AND HORNWORTS OF EUROPE AND MACARONESIA
(DISTRIBUTION AND STATUS)
2nd edition fully revised and updated

by R. Schumacker & J. Váňa

Click to order...

The first edition of the Identification Keys to Liverworts and Hornworts of Europe and Macaronesia published in 2000 was very successful: some 400 copies were sold. Thanks to comments, remarks, questions of many users encountering difficulties – especially in the keys to genera or in some keys for large genera, from students, beginners, experimented hobby – and professional bryologists, as to recently published books and papers, we started since 2003 to prepare a 2nd fully revised and updated edition.

This 2nd edition, carrefully edited by SORUS/Poznań, provides, a.o., new (or partly new) keys for Conocephalum, Fossombronia, Herbertus, Lepidozia, Lophozia, Plagiochila, Riccia, Scapania, Telaranea, etc., numerous new keys for subspecies or varieties, updated distribution data, many corrections to patronyms, an impressive number (ca. 300!) of new synonyms in the corpus as in the index and many new useful references to literature and illustrations until August 2005.

The book is provided with a metallic spiral binding.
